Amazing Autumn Achievements
Place Value Excitement
This term in maths, we have been focusing upon place value, using our super number knowledge to help us identify numbers…all the way up to millions! We can tell you that in the number 873, 245, there are 7 tens of thousands. We have also been using our place value knowledge to compare numbers. We can tell you that 895, 345 is greater than 875, 436. We have loved using our knowledge and competing as a class in Place Value UNO! Well done to Rital and Lujain for their wonderful use of part-whole models to partition numbers this term, and Oscar’s excellent use of mathematical knowledge within his explanations. We can’t wait to continue using our number knowledge and multiplication facts throughout next term!
Marvellous Narratives
In writing this term, we have been looking at a narrative text based upon the amazing adventures within ‘The Odyssey’. We have worked really hard on our use of adjectives to describe the noun, and have published work such as ‘Odysseus tip-toed into the creepy, horrifying cave’. Kamsi and Funmi’s use of adjectives have really enabled the reader to create a clear picture in their head of the scene in play. Well done! We have also started to focus more on our verb choice and our use of adverbs to really set the scene for the reader. Some of our work includes ‘Anxiously, Odysseus edged further into the deep, gloomy cave towards the gigantic one-eyed Cyclops.’ Well done to Frankie who has really focused on his handwriting this term, and his use of adjectives has been super!
Ancient Discoveries
This term in history, we have been focusing upon life within ancient Greece and the role of their most powerful leader, Alexander the Great. We have absolutely loved using our research skills to establish key facts about this key historical figure and his impact within ancient Greece. We can tell you that Alexander the Great was born in Pella, but died of an unknown cause. We have used our historical knowledge to prepare a debate within class. The class were divided into either Team Athens or Team Sparta! What an exciting history filled half term we have experienced in Year 5! Olivia and Rose created amazing Top Trump cards of key mythical figures within ancient Greece. We can’t wait to find out more!
