Autumn Aspirations
At the start of the school year, our Year 6 pupils took part in a vibrant and inspiring art project designed to help them set three personal goals for the year ahead. Through line and colour work, each child crafted a unique piece of artwork that captured their aspirations and ambitions—focusing on growth, determination, and dreaming big. Some children wanted to improve their handwriting or reading to others wanting to climb a mountain or become an engineer.

Marvellous Mathematicians
Our Year 6 pupils have been developing their number skills by exploring the full range of the number system—from super-sized numbers in the millions to super-small decimals and even negative numbers. We’ve been stretching our thinking and building confidence by solving puzzles and tackling real-life problems together. Such as exploring the units we use to measure with, how to convert between them and how to solve multi-step word problems involving a range of measurements.
It’s been exciting to see how maths becomes more manageable—and even fun—when we break it down and work together. We’re proud of the progress our learners are making and how they’re growing as confident mathematicians.
The Island
In writing, we have we’ve been developing our descriptive writing skills by focusing on powerful language, sentence structure, and the use of spelling, punctuation and grammar to help our readers visualise the settings in our work. Our writing was based around mysterious island locations—lush forests, crashing waves, and hidden waterfalls—described in vivid detail to paint pictures in the reader’s mind.
Unbeknown to the children at first, all of the images and scenes we explored were inspired by our current class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom. Using stills from the film adaptation, pupils crafted rich descriptions that captured the atmosphere and mood of each location. This helped them practise using ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence openers, and figurative language to bring their writing to life.
It’s been a brilliant way to link reading and writing, and we’re proud of how our pupils are growing as thoughtful, expressive writers.
The Industrial Revolution
In our history lessons this term, Year 6 have been exploring the Industrial Revolution and its impact on society—especially on children. We were shocked to learn about child labour and the dangerous conditions many young workers faced in factories, mines and mills. It was hard to imagine children our age working long hours in unsafe environments, often with little pay and no education.
This topic has sparked thoughtful conversations and a deeper understanding of fairness, safety and the importance of education. It’s been a powerful reminder of how history can help us appreciate the present and inspire us to make a better future.
Awesome Autumn
As part of our Harvest Festival celebrations, Year 6 took time to observe and sketch elderflower blossom and leaves in detail. We explored how shape and shading can bring an image to life, thinking carefully about the direction of light and how it affects what we see. Pupils added tiny details to their drawings, capturing the delicate structure of the flowers and the texture of the leaves.
Alongside our artwork, we hosted a quiz in the festival assembly all about trees and their role in ecosystems. We learned how trees support wildlife, improve air quality and help combat climate change. It was a great way to connect art, science and seasonal celebration—appreciating the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.
