Fairies, Flights & Flora
What an exciting half term it has been and, despite it being short, jam-packed with fun and learning!
Year 1 have enjoyed lots of new experiences, including our first trip out of school on the Metro. Some children even experienced the Metro for the first time ever, which was wonderful.
We went to the Discovery Museum as part of our History topic, ‘How has transport changed?’ The children had a brilliant time exploring the museum and discovering all about transport from the past. We also loved the Science Maze, which was full of interesting activities. The best part, though, was our workshop with Jack. He taught us all about Stephenson’s Rocket, the first ever steam engine, then we even got to make our own steam engines! We had a blast!
We’ve loved learning all about transport and how it has changed. We even made our own paper aeroplanes to try and recreate the first flight and the Wright brothers’ inventions. The children also made their own assembly lines, as invented by Henry Ford, to make as many cars as they could for as cheap as possible! In Literacy, we have made our own books: ‘All About Trains’, which showcase all of our new knowledge about trains.

In DT, we made a new chair for Baby Bear, whose chair was broken by Goldilocks! The children investigated what chairs are, what types of chairs there are and what makes chairs stable. We then built our own chairs, with the children discovering how to join the legs to the seat and the seat to the back. Our chairs were ‘just right!’ for Baby Bear.
In Art, the children have created some beautiful ‘Flora and Fauna’ sketches, inspired by the local wildlife. They then made a collage of their chosen insect, in the style of Eric Carle.
We’ve been hunting for signs of spring in Science, and have loved playing underneath the blossom tree in our playground. The fairy garden is coming to life and we are looking forward to planting some vegetables in there soon. The children have loved seeing more sunshine and warmer weather.
It’s hard to believe that we’ve had time for any Maths amongst all of this fantastic learning, however the children are working hard every day and improving their mathematical knowledge through ‘Mastering Number’, and their mathematical skills. We’ve even learnt how to measure length and mass this half term; a great life skill!
Well done to the children for their hard work. We hope you all have a happy and safe Easter holiday.
